About Sixteen Songs
Let’s make a mixtape for the ghost of who you once were. Sixteen Songs is musical archaeology: a curated playlist that maps your adolescence, your strangest years and tender scars. The constraint is essential. You can pick only sixteen tracks. Not seventeen, not a streaming dump, and definitely not a vibe. Just sixteen songs you once played on repeat, the ones you learned the chords to and that still make you want to dance or cry or both. Think of it this way: you’re making a time capsule to share with someone special (possibly someone who is doing the same for you). Let them hear the mix of yearning, poetry, and power ballads that shaped you. Somewhere in the clash between your sixteen songs and theirs is the sound of friendship deepening. And yes, the number is symbolic: today is Day 88, and 8 + 8 = 16. Arbitrary? Sure. But so was the length of a cassette.

Burn your playlist to a physical CD (if you can), or better yet, make a fake cassette with a printed J-card tracklist. Hand deliver it to a friend; then drive to the mall while you listen to it together.
Inspiration
No music has ever haunted me more than the soundtrack of my sixteenth year. Even now, the songs from that era carry a kind of gravitational pull, anchoring me to old bedrooms, scratched CDs, car rides with friends I no longer see, and feelings I barely understood at the time. My tastes have shifted, but those early tracks still hum underneath everything. Streaming platforms have made discovering music easy. But nothing in the process feels hardwon. You no longer have to dig through liner notes, memorize record labels, or play detective with your cousin’s glove-box tape stash. You don’t have to decode anything. Music once arrived like a rumor or a secret, passed from hand to hand, bound to a particular time and place. Of course, that is exactly what an old person would say. Still, the feeling—the rush of recognition when you discover a new song—hasn’t gone anywhere. That is what Sixteen Songs is about, honoring the soundtrack of your formative years, however cringe, and maybe giving yourself permission to discover your older self in newer music.
