Churning Day
New Year’s Quietude
A Day for Doing Nothing or Maybe Churning Ice Cream by Hand
About Churning Day
Welcome to the Vanity Cycle, a two-day meditation on laziness and the joy of giving up. And what better way to begin than by sinking directly into a mountain of pillows and refusing to get up? Churning Day is about succumbing to the gravitational pull of your bed or any nest-like surface. The most effort you’ll exert today is hand-churning a pint of ice cream, and even that’s optional. Don’t expect the churning to result in something edible. You might just swirl a bit, sigh dramatically, and flop back on the couch. You’re not alone in this journey from nothing to nowhere. You and your loved ones have silently agreed to do absolutely nothing, except maybe text each other from across the room to ask for snacks. Good luck with that. Want tea? Get someone else to make it. Want dinner? That’s between you and the food delivery app.
Ways to observe
(A) Low effort
Remain horizontal for as long as possible. Bonus points for replying to family requests with, “I’m churning,” and then doing absolutely nothing.
(B) Recommended
Actually churn some ice cream. A simple mason jar recipe with cream, sugar, and vanilla is ideal. Then watch a superhero movie in which the stakes are wildly high—but your emotional investment is nonexistent.
(C) High effort
Recreate a full 18th-century churning experience: don a bonnet, build a butter paddle, and churn by hand using a wooden barrel churn. Narrate the process like a Werner Herzog documentary. Collapse halfway through and order gelato instead.
Inspiration
Let’s begin with an acknowledgment: actually churning ice cream is hard. It’s physical labor and it requires commitment. It is, in short, entirely inappropriate for Churning Day. But we included it anyway, for those unfortunate few who are temperamentally incapable of spending a full day doing nothing. If they must move, let them stir cream, salt, and ice in a bowl until it sort of becomes dessert. At least the outcome (eating ice cream) is on brand.
The real reason this day exists is because something worse is coming. Stupid Monday is just around the corner, and it is, without question, the worst day of the year. It’s a bleak buffet of adult responsibility. Budgeting, planning, bill-paying, inbox-zeroing. A day of forced virtue and financial literacy. In order to face that horror with any dignity, I realized we would need a weekend-long runway of fluff and indulgence. Thus, the Vanity Cycle. So if you’re capable of facing Stupid Monday like a functioning human being, congratulations. I admire your basic life skills. I also like butterscotch morsels in my ice cream, when you get to churning.

In Praise of Idleness by Bertrand Russell
A contrarian essay by the famed British philosopher, arguing that society should embrace leisure instead of work. Russell boldly proposes that a four-hour workday would suffice in the modern age.
Eat
